Transcript 0:00 [upbeat rock music] Welcome back to the In Extremis Performance Coaches Insights on Ironsights podcast. 0:08 Every Wednesday, you can join the IEP team, including Jake Labhart, Aaron Dugger, Jacob Hepner, and myself, Scott Howell, for discussions on increasing human performance for the tactical athlete, law enforcement officer, military, and first responders. 0:23 Today marks a milestone for us here at IEP as we dig into how to balance all things training as a high-performance athlete. 0:31 This leads to a greater conversation about our newly formulated performance program, how we developed it and why, how it practically relates to the active law enforcement officer and athlete, where on-demand performance is a job requirement. 0:45 If you wanna know if you're actually ready for IEP Performance, you should visit iep-assessment.com. Again, that's iep-assessment.com. There, you're gonna learn about and perform the IEP assessment. 0:59 We've tested hundreds of SWAT and special operations law enforcement officers nationwide. 1:04 Now, you can use this uniquely designed battery of physical performance evaluations to assess your ability and readiness for IEP Performance. 1:13 Something else to note, if the assessment identifies some deficiencies you need to work on prior to entering into the IEP Performance track, we'll immediately provide you an informed recommendation about which IEP program might prepare you best to maximize all the benefits of the workouts and training schedule located within this specialized signature program. 1:34 [upbeat rock music] Yeah, let's talk about static versus dynamic programming- Yeah... and how that relates to- Static versus daily. I, I just call it daily. Okay. 1:45 Yeah, dynamic's fine too, but- So the, so the daily programming, and how that fits, how they fit together. Yeah, in our system. Yeah, how they fit together, how they support one another- Mm-hmm... 1:54 and what people should know about, um, those. And when we talk about the daily program, that being called our Performance Program. Yeah, Performance Track, for sure. Yeah, so where, where do you wanna start? 2:02 You wanna start with the Performance Program? I'm gonna diff- I'm, I'm gonna start with high level. Sure. 2:04 So, like, if you look at IEP as a company, what this is gonna look like is, and this is our recommendations for the flow of the, of the, of... You come to our website, Scott. You think, "You know what? 2:17 I need some help," you know? The first thing we're gonna recommend is you take an assessment. We assess. We think, "Okay, where are you good at? Where are you deficient at?" Right. "And where could we help you at?" 2:28 Right. From there, you'll be recommended, from the assessment we previously talked about on other podcasts, [smacks lip] you'll be recommended one of three static programs. Yep. 2:37 Strength, speed, speed and power, or capacity. All needs that you're gonna have- All-... in the law enforcement field... with, with, exactly. Right. Static. Those are static programs. 2:46 What that means is they are not directly linked to a calendar. So they are 10 weeks, right? 10 weeks. Okay, 10 weeks. So- I've always called them one-off programs. One-offs. That's what I've heard. Static. 2:57 I've al- Yeah... yeah, we're all a little different, but- Yeah... I'm gonna force you to use static now. Okay. It's good. That sounds good. [laughs] So what it means- It's, it's evergreen. It's evergreen. Right. 3:04 It's a good example of that. So what it means is Aaron comes to me. Aaron takes the assessment. Aaron finds out that he's not good at- Capacity... capacity. So he gets recommended the Capacity Program. 3:14 He, he has the choice to choose anything he wants. We just provided recommendations. When he decides to jump into the Capacity, the 10-week Capacity Program, he will automatically join at day one. 3:24 So when he purchased the program, the next day or whatever, day one starts. It's for the next 10 weeks. For the next 10 weeks. It's a progressive program that builds on itself every single day, every single week. Yes. 3:35 He gets the full effect of the program 'cause he starts on day one. Start point and an end point. Boom. Yep. At the end of the 10 weeks, he can obviously redo it if he wants to. I definitely know people that do that. 3:47 I don't necessarily recommend that. My recommendation is always go try something different, then come back to it if you want. We'll get to where to go from the, at the end, but that's how static works. 3:55 Static is not linked to a calendar, but he's also... It's not necessarily great as a community focus because he's doing this hypothetically by himself. Yeah. 4:03 Now, you could start the same day as a buddy and be fine, or two days later and be two days l- after him, right? But you're kinda doing it by yourself. Yep. That's all the static programs. 4:12 The pinnacle of what we have, what we're trying to lead, you know, in the previous examples I've used, 100 people come to us, they'll have different deficiencies. We want them all on the same level. 4:21 The pinnacle is gonna be the Performance Track. Okay. The Performance Track- All right... which I'll let you define in a second, kind of what you're looking at, but the Performance Track is, I call it daily program. 4:30 So what that means is you jump on where everyone else is on. Mm-hmm. Right? And it is an ongoing, whereas the Strength, the Speed and Power, and the Capacity is a 10-week program that you... 4:43 a one-off program that you purchase, you have the whole thing. Mm-hmm. This Performance Track is going through... 4:50 It, it, as long as you're a part of it, it'll keep going, and it'll go through different cycles as it keeps going. So static programs could be looked at as sort of an on-ramp, if people understand that term- Yeah... 4:58 based on their deficiency, into the Performance Program, or they could be used as standalone programs for whatever, if that's just one you wanna recycle through. That's fine, too. 5:05 Yeah, but it, they're supportive of one another. Yeah. 5:07 And again, it's a suggestion or recommendation, call it what you want, but a recommendation on, "Hey, we, we, we think you should probably do this first," 'cause when you then land into the Performance Program- Feel good... 5:18 yeah, you feel good and you're set at a, at a s- Yeah... what we call a standard level- Mm-hmm... that we have def- S-... sort of defined. Um, in, w- as you get into our programs, you'll see what that is, but, but we... 5:28 You're, you're coming in with everybody else, and that way you're getting the most out of the Performance Program. Exactly. 5:33 So when we do the assessment, we'll have different data points we have from whether- [clears throat]... 5:37 previous courses they've ran for speed and power, or strength data points, and our goal is to say, "Okay, well, Scott, like, when I look at your job description, I'm going to make the assumption that I would like for you as a male to be able to deadlift more than 315 pounds." 5:51 Mm-hmm. "If you can't, I might, I might..." Again, these are kind of hypothetical examples. "I'm gonna recommend you jump on the Strength Program." Yeah. 5:56 Because then when you are able and capable of accomplishing that after a 10-week program in the Strength cycle or Strength static program, once you get into the Performance Track, you're capable of doing-... 6:06 everything we throw at you, and you understand. Because you're also gonna learn a lot of things- Yes... in the static programs of- Yeah... 'cause you're still gonna have 6:15 movement, change of direction drills in all the programs, and then you get the performance track, you're like, it- you're right, an on-ramp is a great kind of- Yeah, 'cause you-... place to start... 6:22 so you're not w- it's good that you just said that. Like again, if you're doing strength, you're also getting capacity- Yes... and some speed and power. Yes. Just the emphasis is the strength. Again- Exactly... 6:29 on the deficiency, if that's what we, if that's how- Yeah... you've been assessed. So that's a really good point. 6:34 So when you're jumping in, it's not like you're, "Oh, God, now I gotta be ready for all the capacity and the speed and power." Yeah. No. You worked your way into it. No. 6:39 We've worked you into it, and based on the recommendation, you were probably doing okay there before, we just need it to improve on the strength piece a little bit. Yeah. So you're carrying that forward. Yeah. 6:47 And chances are, like, if you're jumping into an IEP program, I'm super biased by this based on the guys I'm sitting around and working with, that your speed, [laughs] your, your, your capacity and your speed and power if you jumped into our strength program is gonna maybe be better than anybody el- Yeah... 7:00 any, any other program that you were already doing. Um, that's just my bias. Yeah. Yeah. 7:04 But, um, yeah, maybe talk about, like, what they s- what is, what are they gonna see inside the performance program when they get there? You mentioned ongoing program, daily program. 7:14 What are they gonna see when they get there? How is it organized in compare and contrast to how our other programs? 7:19 So the whole program's built around increasing performance for your job, optimal readiness for whatever you may experience, and also career longevity. 7:28 So you're g- you're getting pretty much everything you need, that we believe you need for being in law enforcement through this program. You're getting your speed and power. You're getting your strength. 7:37 You're getting your capacity, your balance, stability, stuff that we've talked about and, like, the, the nine metrics that is required s- 7:44 so f- uh, that the NSCA and the TSAC has come up with of, like, this is what you need to be proficient at this job. We incorporate all that in the correct amount of dosages, 7:57 load, intensity, all of that modified to what they're gonna do. 8:01 Yeah, so the, the, I think the, the big takeaway for me in this performance program is this, we're gonna m- we're gonna help you maintain all of those things with this program. We're gonna... 8:12 We've figured out how to put it all together and get it all done all the time so you are either maintaining and/or building that, continuing on those things that you just, you just mentioned. Right. 8:20 Strength, uh, speed and power, and the capacity. Mm-hmm. So you don't have to think about it. 8:25 The other, the other nice thing about that, uh, this is the, this is, like, the bonus with it is, it will constantly be managed so we're never giving you too much of anything. 8:34 And so at some points, like, maybe unbeknownst to you because that's what's going into this programming, there may be a slight more emphasis on the strength, you know, or whatever. Yeah. 8:43 We're certainly gonna change up, and this has already been, a lot of it's already been pre-programmed, uh, so that we can put it in, but in terms of the planning, we're gonna change up the, the movement patterns. 8:52 We're gonna change up the exercise. Yeah. So it's not just seeing the same thing week after week. Yeah. 8:56 Yeah, it's- The, in the previous discussions we had for static programs, why we, we had Aaron go through, "Hey, this is what Monday looks like. This is what Tuesday looks like." Right. Right? That's awesome. 9:03 We can't do that for this program. Why? Because it's always gonna be, we ta- th- those are evergreen. This is not, right? This is like, it's growing as we go, right? It changes a little bit, right? 9:13 And so- Yeah, as we, as we learn more- Yeah... new research comes out, new things- Yeah... we get feedback on, it's, uh, that's, it's gonna change. 9:19 We have a general structure that we're gonna stick with because consistency is a huge, huge thing in any sort of growth, but it's gonna be ever-evolving. Yeah. 9:27 And if we're doing it everything right and being professionals ourselves, it's supposed to be ever-evolving. I, and I think that is unique to what we're doing compared to what maybe a lot of other folks are doing. 9:37 Not to take away that, from what they're putting in and that they, they have good programming, just that this, we're planning to evolve it because we know that things will evolve. Mm-hmm. 9:47 And, and we understand, like, there, there's things that we might not know, and that being specific to the clientele, you know? And the, and the people that are involved in this program. They're gonna give us feedback. 9:58 Yep. We're gonna, we're gonna learn. 9:59 Like, this is, it's not, like, a research project, but it's, it is da- it's, there's gonna be a lot of data going into this, and we're gonna be able to, we're gonna have a lot of communication with those that are in the program. 10:09 Mm-hmm. So we're gonna learn from them on how to make this better because again, I d- I do think it is novel in that sense, uh, which I think is important, like, just being upfront and, and transparent about it. Yeah. 10:18 Like, while the framework is there, and we know we have a solid framework, we also know that we are gonna learn a lot as we're working within it. Yeah. And we will change this. 10:26 God forbid any of us ever say, "I know it all." Yeah, [laughs] shit. Yeah. Never gonna happen. So, like, when I... 10:31 So one of the companies, um, that I program for across the space, like, anytime someone cancels, the first thing I ask is like, "What can I do for the program? Not to keep you here." Right. "You're, you're exiting. 10:41 I, I get that. Totally fine. What can I do to make this a better situation for the people who are on here?" And now I'll get, you know, [laughs] some advice that's terrible. 10:50 [laughs] But I'll get some advice that's good that I'm like, "I didn't even think about that." 'Cause it's hard when you're, 10:55 when you are the person making it that you're not in it all the time, and it's hard to see it for some things. 11:00 You see it so much, it's like, you know, like, if you have a kid and you see them every day, it's hard to see the growth pattern. 11:05 But if you see the kid every couple months, which is kinda weird, you'd see, "Oh, they got taller." So it's like I need to step back and ask other people's opinions and say, "Okay, you're right. I could change that. 11:14 That could make it better for somebody." Yeah, which I think is a little bit novel just kind of in the industry and the, sorry, but more specifically the genre we're talking about. 11:21 'Cause I don't think they get asked that a lot. Like, "How can we be better at this?" Yep. Yep. They're usually being told what to do, and we- Yeah, sit down, shut up, do what I say. 11:28 Yeah, and we've done it this way for so long. This is how we're gonna continue to do it. Just do it this way. And if we wanted to make a change, it takes, like, an act of Congress to change anything. Yep. Mm. 11:37 So this is very much different than that. It's like there's, we have the ability to change it next week if we feel like that's a necessary change. Not that, that- Yep... we intend on doing it that way. 11:46 This will be, this is very well thought out already, so you know, what you get, you know, on, on day one has been thought out two months prior. Yeah. 11:54 But at the same, you know, when you're, when you're jumping into the program, b- bottom line there is this is very flexible because it should be. Mm-hmm. 12:00 And it should be able to be flexed to the needs of the population that's doing it, but also catering- To the upper percentage of people that are jumping into it that are performers. Yep. Hence, the performance program. 12:13 So if you're jumping into this and you, you, you know, you took the assessment and you were really lacking in capacity, and you jump into this program, it's not that you're not gonna get benefit from that, but you're also not going to likely be performing at the same level your peers are performing at. 12:29 Yeah. You're not gonna get the full benefit, 'cause y- Right... your recovery could be lower. You could not be strong enough or so. And so that, to Jacob's point, it's like, "Hey, how can we make this better for you?" 12:39 Like, we try to do that at the beginning. [laughs] Yeah. Maybe what you need, if this isn't working for you, maybe what you need is the strength program for a little while, the capa- capacity program for a while. 12:48 Just jump out, do that, and come back. Yeah. I love how we're doing this, 'cause we're... I think from the very beginning when all of us sat down, I said, "I don't want to do the same thing everyone else is doing." 12:59 Yeah, exactly. Hence why we are defining our target market as, our, our person we're going after as an athlete. They are defined as an athlete, which is different than what you see in this space, right? 13:10 And we're going after it differently than anyone else, because we're saying, "I don't have... I'm not giving you a one-size-fits-all solution." Yep. "I'm giving you... I don't know where you're at. 13:21 I'm meeting you where you're at. 13:22 I'm helping you where you're at, and then I'm hopefully getting everyone on the same page in the long run, but I'm not making the assumption that we're all on the same ca- place, 'cause we're not." You would... 13:33 Honestly, there's three of us here, and we are all different. 'Cause I guarantee he's better at speed and power than me. I'm better, I'm better at capacity. I'm better, you're better at strength. 13:40 Yeah, and, and the most important part about that for me, and this is, I share those sentiments, 13:46 uh, one of the things I really wanted to do coming into this was make sure people understood why they're doing what they're doing. Yeah. 13:52 Just going back to they're being told what to do, or they're just buying a template or something, and they don't understand. It's like the education piece. 13:59 So my hope is, is, like, you know, if they don't understand it, they'll stick with us long enough, 'cause we're gonna explain it to you. Yeah. And- Sooner or, or you're gonna ask- You're, you're gonna ask-... 14:06 and I'm gonna make a video on it... and we, we've probably already done a video- Yeah... or a podcast or something on this. So there is rationale behind all this, and we'll be able to give you an explanation. 14:14 And as things come up, we will continue to educate. Um, we'll stay on top of our game as, as we have been. Oh, they'll be able to communicate with me- But they'll be able to communicate directly... any day, any day. 14:22 Like here, here's what's going on. Aaron's cell phone number. [laughs] Yeah, more or less. Oh, maybe not that. [laughs] Brittany- You wouldn't be too happy with me... 14:27 there'll be direct communication for people inside that performance program. Yeah. So, like, "Hey, I'm not sure about this," no problem. Here's, here's what you can do. If you needed a modification, like- Yep... 14:36 we could talk about that. Yeah. Things... It makes it a little bit more personalized, but it also makes it more real time, which I think is what people need. Um, because not, it's not a one-size-fits-all. 14:45 This is not a cookie cutter program. But it, it does speak very specifically to a population, we talked about this in our very first podcast, in understanding all the other things, too. 14:54 Spent a long time trying to understand you're not the same. There is no off-season. You know, the stress levels are different. Like, you are managing wacky shifts all the time. 15:05 Like, there are challenges in this that most athletes- Mm... may not face. There's, again, there's no deployment, so you're not gone for six months and then coming back for six, able to recover and kind of regroup. 15:15 There's no opportunity to ramp up and overtrain. Yeah. So we're, we, we've tried to leave, like, room in the margins to, to, to make adjustments, but also very little room in the, in the margins for you to fail. Mm-hmm. 15:26 So anyway, yeah. Anything else you guys want to say about this performance program, this performance track? 15:31 If we're summing it up into one piece, it's performance o- we're building performance on demand by training smarter. Yep. I love it. I came up with train smarter. You're just stealing it from me. 15:39 [laughs] I'm just kidding. I love it. Go check out IEP Performance Track.
